Today's Manga: Not a sausage. I saw some good stuff, like the XXX-Holic novel and Mao-chan, but decided to skip both in favor of some other large purchases.

Today's Anime: The first set of School Rumble season 2, the seventh disc of Death Note, This Ugly Yet Beautiful World (you only get so many chances, Gainax... make this one count!), and with 25% off plus $10 in Borders Bucks, a well-hidden copy of Kamichu. That's got to be a rarity now... I didn't even notice the Geneon logo until I got it home.

I also picked up My Japanese Coach for the DS. Granted, even breezing through the proficiency test only let me skip 10 lessons, so I've got a long way to go to get to what I really want to review using this program, but with patience, I'll unlock the important things like kanji and lots of vocab words eventually. The games aren't too bad, considering that they're all learning aids. It just takes a lot of "mastery points" to master simple words that I already know, and it requires complete mastery of all ten vocab words in each lesson to unlock the next lesson. Okay, so let's call it good review. Probably one of the easiest ways to keep up with my language skills and recover the skills I used to have but forgot.

Well, the problem is that my opinion of most Gainax series changes dramatically right at the end. Let me try to summarize:

Evangelion: Hey, this is interesting... I'm sure it'll pick up soon. Okay, this is neat. I don't really know what's going on, but it's pretty cool. Now I just have no idea what's going on. They explain it later, right? I have a feeling they explained something, but I don't get it. THAT was the ending? Oh, there's a movie. Two movies... and the first was just a rehash of the series followed by the first half of the second movie. I want my money back. And the second one made even LESS sense, but it seemed to have a plot, so I feel like it's even more insulting!

FLCL: What the hell is going on? No, I mean what the HELL is going on? It's kind of funny, but WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? Oh... that explanation actually made sense. In retrospect, that was pretty awesome. But I wish I didn't have to sit through six episodes of nonsense to get there.

Mahoromatic: Ooh, this is cute. I love the way they end each episode, and the ending of the first season ruled. ... wait, THAT'S the ending? What the hell? Let me check the manga... ew. But at least it made sense in the manga version.

Kare Kano: Finally, a story I know is good. Ooh, visual gag references to other Gainax series! I get it! And now the play... or another recap. Okay, Soichirou angst... guess the play is in episode 26... IT ENDS AT 25? They spent the entire second half of the series building up to what was one of the greatest moments in all of literary history, and they DIDN'T GET THAT FAR? Stop laughing, little sister voice actors. It's not funny.

Abenobashi: HA HA HA HA HA HA ha ha ha ha... um... where are we going with this? Oh. Well, that's a letdown. I feel kind of guilty for laughing now.

Petite Princess Yucie: Gainax and magical girls... how can this go wrong? Actually, this is pretty fun. I like the characters, and for once, I really like the antagonist! And now the ending... slightly disappointing perhaps, but compared to what I was expecting, that was great!

Gurren Lagann: One of these days, you will do more than take up space on my shelf.

Gunbuster: I don't even remember if this was by Gainax or not, but the ending was cool. Shame nothing ever really happened because we skipped over it all.

But we'll see.

Page Summary

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
