I really need to get to Ulence Flats tonight

Today's Bridge: Marred by misfortune, mainly, and another one of those contracts with a severe trump shortage. Brandy opened 1C, Paul overcalled 2D, and I bid 2S with S A-7-6-5 H x-x-x D A-x-x C Q-J-x. Brandy passed that with S Q-2 H A-Q-J-x D Q C K-10-x-x-x-x. We make 3C easily, and possibly 5C thanks to the heart finesse working, but I only lucked out with off one because Paul won the opening club lead and led back a heart, the worst possible lead. I can't imagine what he was thinking, even if it was a singleton, which it was. Dan threw the king, so I covered, ran the queen of diamonds to my ace, and led back a diamond for a ruff. All I could do after that was try running hearts, and Paul ruffed the first one and led a club, which I won. I got to ruff my other diamond loser, but I was pretty much finished then. I'm pretty sure I picked up one of my other little spades in the ensuing crossruff, but all I could do then was cash the ace and lead my last club to Paul's remaining trump. We did get into a pretty solid 4S, but we both had the same distribution and the missing club honors were placed so that I couldn't pick up an extra trick. Off one again.

Today's Work: I mastered the art of being in two places at once, and we accomplished everything at our meeting except the second most important purpose. The first is due tomorrow, so I can understand why we concentrated on it.
