This Ugly Yet Beautiful World

I got a request for my opinion of this series, and two episodes in, I figured I'd give a first impression. For a series full of weird stuff, it's managed to be amazingly slice-of-life so far. There's one kid who seems to have some idea of what's going on, and everyone else is just coping as best they can. the characters are the pretty typical Gainax bunch - junior high kids, I believe, and a woman who acts pretty much like Misato but looks more like Ritsuko. And then there's the story... from the first episode, it looked like it was gearing up to be a rehash of Devilman - vaguely sexual situations, naked girls, and a main character who transforms into a monster to fight other monsters. The second episode was considerably more Chobits as the new girl, Hikari, tries to fit in with the rest of the cast. It's quite entertaining, and I expect there will be even more random leaps of style.

If the teacher turns out to be a huge-breasted pervert, though, I may have to quit watching and destroy the DVDs completely. Just saying.

"I never sent you this postcard."

Today's Bridge: I think Ken was a bit hard on himself... his side only made one game contract and was set in three attempts, but the cards were really stacked against them. For my part, I made a 3NT due to what was definitely a misplay on his part: I had S A-10 H J-x D 7-x-x-x C A-K-x-x-x and my partner, Paul, had S x-x-x-x H A-Q-x-x D Q-8 C Q-x-x. Notrump was a big mistake - I opened 1C, he responded 1H, I bid 1NT to show my weakness, he bid 2S, I bid 3C, and he closed in 3NT. The diamond lead set Mike up for four diamond tricks off the bat, and he led a spade back. I had to take the ace and try the finesse, and Ken let my jack go. After that, whether he played the king next trick or not, I had my three hearts and five clubs. If he covers the jack, I only get two hearts and have to take my winners and concede to avoid being off more than the one, although I'd probably keep the ten of spades to see whether the opponents might misguess the last card in my hand. Doubt it.

Today's Work: Some hilarious contradictions that I can't really talk about (basically, an E-mail instructing us to keep our systems on until further notice, followed by a notice of a power outage coming up), and some attempts to schedule classes, because the network was down most of the day. At least I have a meeting tomorrow.

Today's Gaming: I installed Phantasmagoria 2 and started playing through it, looking for videos that Spoony missed in his playthrough so far. Man, I missed this game. I also missed a few things myself, like Curtis making an obscene prank phone call to Jocelyn. Cute... and a bit creepy.

Today's TV: I paid attention to Terminator and Heroes tonight. Now I really don't know what to think about either. Finally, one more episode of This Ugly Yet Beautiful World. I'm rooting for a Cardcaptor Sakura theme.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
