Today's Bridge: It was an experienced team against a less experienced team, and the results spoke for themselves, but I believe it was instructive. We started with a 3S that I figured we probably weren't strong enough for, but if we weren't, the opponents were likely to make 3D. I think I misjudged, but the opponents crashed their trump honors and Dan made the contract exactly. I got a 1C opener next and ended up in 4C, but the trump split was awful and I didn't have the top honors to maintain control long enough to get rid of a heart loser. We finally finished the game with 2H - S A-2 H A-9-8-x-x D 5 C A-9-x-x-x facing S K-Q-J-x-x H J-10-3 D Q-x-x-x C x. I would have raised to game if I'd needed to. I ducked the opening diamond lead to Ryan, who led back a club. I took the ace and ruffed a club, crossed back to the ace of spades, and ruffed a second club. I figured the best route then was to run spades, throwing a club while both opponents followed. When I led the jack, Ryan ruffed with the queen, so I overruffed and led the last club, ruffing with the jack and overruffed with the king. Ryan led a diamond, but I was able to ruff low and pull trump with the now master 9-8. Ryan declared 3S, but didn't play it all that well - Dan had opened 1D, so I led my lowest diamond from S 9-x-x H K-x-x-x D K-9-8-7 C 7-5 through dummy's S 7-x-x-x H A-Q-J-x-x D x C K-J-x. Dan captured with the ace and led the nine of hearts, which I ducked. Ryan chose to try the ace of hearts next, which Dan ruffed with the queen. He led a club, which Ryan took with the ace, and he crossed to the king and finally started pulling trump, but Dan had the ace. He cashed the queen of clubs, on which I threw a low diamond, and exited with a diamond. Ryan ruffed with dummy's last trump, but was left with a heart he couldn't eliminate. I pointed out afterward (and during, frankly) that Dan's nine of hearts was a pretty clear singleton, so pulling trump immediately was the best route, and he could pick up the hearts by finessing against my king twice. He also could have picked up the queen of clubs by taking the free finesse.

Today's Work: I started the big training effort, and was happy to discover that if I pass the pre-test in a learning module, it just gives me credit for it without having to take the course. That should help me hit the deadline.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
