Today's Bridge: We had some pretty impressive hands today. The opponents started with a slam with an overtrick, but most of the rest of the hands were ours. I opened 1C with S K-x-x-x D A-K-J-x C A-K-J-x-x, and Ken overcalled 1H. Naturally, I doubled, and Ken redoubled, taking Brent off the hook to respond. He bid 1NT anyway, so I bid 2H to force him to choose a suit. Ken doubled that, rather uselessly, but Brent bid 2S and I raised to 3S, in deference to the fact that he might be really weak and have only three spades. He had the ace of spades, at least, and ended up making four. With a big partscore, I picked up S A H K-x-x D J-10-9-x-x C K-Q-J-x. Not a huge hand, but I opened 1D in fourth seat, and Ken overcalled 1S. That got passed around to me, so I bid 2C, and Ken went to 2S. Rather than choose my own suit, I doubled this one, and Brent figured I was asking for his best suit once again (which was correct) and bid 3D with S K-x-x-x H Q-x-x D A-x-x C x-x-x. Not a bad choice. I could also see 2NT, but that would have sent me back to 3D. Ken started by cashing the ace of clubs, then switching to a low heart to Dan's ace. I assumed a club ruff was coming, but Ken followed suit. To eliminate the ruff, I cashed the ace of spades, then crossed to the ace of diamonds - when both opponents followed, the ruff was no longer a threat. Even if a club got ruffed, it would be with a natural trump trick. I led a trump from dummy, and Dan put up the king, crashing Ken's queen. He led another club, to which Ken followed a third time, and I just needed to pull the last trump and claim. There are distributions where the opponents could set 3D, but I believe they would make 2S on those layouts. Dan declared 2H next, and with six spades to the ace in my hand, I could only lead the ace and another spade, hoping that Brent could ruff and that he had a lot of power. He did indeed ruff, then cash two diamonds and a club. I high-lowed on the diamonds, but he led a club, letting Dan pull our trump and make the contract. Had he let me ruff a diamond and lead another spade, it would have been a two-trick set. Alas. Finally, the opponents had some bidding confusion and ended up in 6H when Ken was pressing toward a slam in clubs - Dan opened 1H, Ken responded 1S, and Dan jumped to 3C. Ken jumped to 4H, which we all took to be a natural bid and potentially inviting slam, but he intended it to be agreeing clubs as trump and asking for key cards. In the end, they settled in 6H. Dan had H A-K-10-9-x D Q-x C A-K-J-9-8-x and Ken had S A-x-x-x H J-8 D A-K-x C 10-x-x-x. I led my singleton queen of clubs, and Dan took it and led a low heart to the jack and Brent's queen. Brent correctly diagnosed my desire to have a club returned, so I got my ruff for the set. The funny thing, aside from 7C being a 7/8 laydown (it only loses if I have all three clubs), is that laying down the ace and king of trump would have guaranteed the contract. Even if the queen doesn't fall in two tricks, it's the only loser. If I have Q-x of hearts left, I can't get to Brent's hand to receive the ruff, and if he has both, I have nothing left to ruff with. I'm also the safe hand if he crosses to dummy in diamonds and just runs the eight, then the jack, aiming to pick up Q-x-x-x in Brent's hand for an overtrick. Basically, he played it the only way that could possibly fail.

Today's Work: Making definite progress toward something I've been wanting to do for a long time. Also hating Windows fonts. Lots of hating Windows fonts.

I tried steak fajitas for the first time tonight. I don't think they turned out very well. I probably used the wrong kind of steak and didn't cut it thin enough. But even bad fajitas are still pretty good.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
