Today's Bridge: It was not a good day for declaring. I started with a pretty solid S A-Q-x-x-x H 10-x-x D K-J-9 C A-x, so I opened 1S and Dan responded 3S. I was top for my bid and had a doubleton, so I raised to game. His S K-x-x H A-Q-x D x-x-x C J-10-x-x sadly didn't offer much possibility, and every critical card was offside - all three diamonds, the king of hearts, and both club honors (were not in Ryan's hand, where I could throw him in and hope he'd lead another diamond). Fortunately, Ryan led a diamond, so I wasn't off as much as I should have been. Dan then opened 1H and Brent overcalled 3C when I had S A-J-x-x-x H Q-x-x D Q-x-x-x-x. It was tempting to pass, but I went for 4H, off one again. I figured that was coming, though. Ryan next went for 4S, probably doomed, but I think he played it poorly, and I gave up a chance to ruff with my singleton king of spades, letting him get away for off two. Dan opened 2C and I didn't have enough to go anywhere - off one again. Finally, he opened 1C when I had S 10-9-x-x-x H Q-J-x D Q-x C x-x-x - 1D, 2NT, 3S, 3NT. He had A-J-7 of spades and ducked the queen lead, unblocking the jack. When Brent followed with the king, that set up the suit, but I pointed out afterward that taking the ace was a better play - he can then run the jack and cross to the 10-9, guaranteeing four tricks in the suit even if Brent wisely switches to a different suit. He had A-K-x in both red suits, so the queens were entries if he needed them. In the end, he had to lose one spade and the ace of clubs - he was really in the 2NT opening range, which I probably would just have raised to game rather than dabbling in spades.

Today's Work: There was a lot to discuss, and we were all in agreement at the end of the day about what needs to be done. We also averted a potential crisis with some quick thinking and decisive action. It's nice when things work out like that.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
