It's getting cold again

Today's Bridge: More a triumph of bidding than play, I think, but we excelled at both. I opened 1NT with S A-10-x-x H Q-x D K-J-9-x C A-Q-10, a minimum with a non-solid doubleton, but much better in my mind than 1D. Dan H. overcalled 2H, and Ken doubled. Thinking it might be for takeout, I bid my spades, and he closed in 2NT with S Q-x-x H A-x-x-x D A-x-x C x-x-x or so. The opening heart lead ran to my queen, and I thought it would be a good idea to keep Dan out of the lead, even though the best plan would actually be to let HIM take the first trick and conspire to lose to Jerry only after that, if I must. But I ran the jack of diamonds, then cashed the ace and king. When the queen fell, I claimed the last diamond and my three aces. Jerry actually had the K-J of both black suits, so I have no idea what Dan was bidding on. Then I picked up S Q-10-x-x H 7 D K-Q-J-x-x-x C A-x. I opened 1D just on distribution, and Ken jumped to 2S. I responded 3S to let him know we had a fit, and he cue-bid 4D. I bid 5C to let him know that I had his missing ace, and he attempted to close at 5S, missing the ace of hearts. I considered 6D, suggesting that as a trump suit, but I went with 6S instead. My reasoning was that the 4-4 fit would be better as trump, since there were heart ruffs available, and that in spades, the heart lead would run up to Ken's king, potentially setting up an extra trick. Jerry in fact underled his ace, so with the 3-2 trump break, Ken was able to throw most of his clubs on the diamonds and make an overtrick. The opponents made a game next, and I don't think we could have set it, and I had to pass Jerry's 1D opener with S Q-6 H A-x D K-Q-9-x-x C Q-J-x-x. What could I bid? Ken didn't have a reopening double, either, and while we had a fit in clubs, it would have been a long shot for either of us. I started with the hearts, and dummy had S J-10-x-x-x H K-x-x D J-x-x C x-x. Jerry took the second heart with his queen, then led a third heart, so I ruffed. I tried the low spade, and Ken covered with the ace, cashed the king, and led a third spade, which I ruffed again. That was five tricks for our side, and I still had two guaranteed trump tricks. The jack of clubs set up for a second undertrick in the end. I finished the rubber with H A-Q-J-x-x-x-x D K-x-x-x C A-x. I opened 1H, I think Dan overcalled 1S, and the rest of the auction was unopposed: 2C-2H-2NT-4H. Ken had the respectable S A-x-x H 5 D Q-10-9 C Q-10-9-8-x-x, which was less powerful than I was expecting and offered some trick-taking potential, but no entries. Dan led a low club, so I tried the eight, drawing the jack and ace. I led my other club, hoping to set up something there, but Dan ruffed, putting paid to that idea. He led the king of spades, so I took it to get the only board entry I was likely to have for the trump finesse. It worked, but Dan showed out when I cashed the ace. I pulled the king, just to prevent Jerry from stealing a tempo with it later, and ruffed his spade return. I still had my eye on the clubs, even though it was hopeless - I needed to score two diamonds, which meant finding the jack. I was going to finesse, but Dan jumped right up with the ace, handing me the contract.

Today's Work: I finished what I was working on, only to discover a new problem, and this is one that existed when we first got this software. It seems like something we should fix, but I didn't want to take it on without the task lead's approval, especially since I think he already told the higher-ups that we'd be finishing tomorrow.

I was going to make salmon fajitas tonight, but decided to go with lower-effort kebabs and bacon-wrapped jalapeños. Good stuff, at least. I'm still feeling a bit sick from day to day, but I'll be able to rest a bit soon.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
