Today's Bridge: Dan C. was my partner today, and he played the first four hands. He made the first three, but the fourth was a 2NT overcall that I had no support for. I had a jack. But I had a really strong hand for a 2S overcall next, and it was easy to make it with two overtricks to finish the rubber. I passed with a glance at my next hand before sorting it - I had an ace, a king, and a jack, certainly not enough for a bid. What I didn't notice was that they were all hearts: S x-x H A-K-J-9-8-7-2 D x-x C x-x. Dan H. rather predictably opened 1C (Precision) and Jerry responded 1D, so I took the opportunity to jump in with 4H, taking no half-measures. Dan H. quite rightly doubled, but when he cashed two spades and two diamonds, then led a third diamond, I got away with off two. Dan C. had S J-10-x-x H Q-10-x D x-x-x C x-x-x, giving me two entries in trump to lead spades. Jerry had the queen of spades, which established the ten as a parking place for one of my club losers. Even so, I don't think we can stop a slam in either minor, and a grand slam might be doable - the hearts split 3-0. Had I opened 3H as would be expected, Dan H. could double and they might yet find the slam. He went for 4S in the final hand, but I had most of the power on the wrong side, and the trump split was against him - Dan C. picked up his K-J-x of trump with the king on the finesse, a diamond ruff, and a second diamond ruff over dummy's ten, while I got the A-Q of hearts and at least one club.

Today's Work: Still trying to puzzle through various issues. We're making progress and discovering some things that look like obvious mistakes by the people who worked on this stuff before we got it.

I still haven't figured out how to cook beef in the oven. I guess I need to leave it in there overnight to cook properly?
