Today's Bridge: We got off to a bad start, but the cards were against us - the best we managed in the first rubber was a partscore followed by a pre-empt that kept the opponents out of an easy slam - the only trick available to us was a diamond if we cashed it straight off, banking on a 1-1 split. Then we got to business - with S Q-10-x-x-x H A-Q-J-9-7 D 8-x C x, I overcalled Dan C.'s 1H with 1S and ended up declaring 2S. Ken's S A-K-x H 6-x-x D J-10-9-x C x-x-x gave the hand some interesting implications, particularly since Jerry clearly had a heart void. I ruffed the second club and started by cashing the A-K of spades, which I think was a mistake - I should have started with the queen, then crossed and led a heart, letting Jerry ruff with the last spade if he so chose. That would leave me another trump entry to dummy for a second heart finesse, helping me set up the suit for at least three tricks to go with the five spades. As it was, I crossed back to the ten of spades (the jack having been a doubleton), then led a diamond to Dan's queen. I sluffed a heart on the club return rather than waste my last trump too early, and he switched to a low heart, won in hand. A second heart put him back in the lead to cash a second diamond, but I had the final trump and two top hearts for the contract. My next hand was H 9-x-x D K-x-x-x C J-10-9-8-x-x - I opened 3C, Jerry overcalled 3S, Ken raised me to 4C, and Jerry went for 4S, which Ken doubled. I signaled with the low club on the first trump trick, and Ken dutifully underled his ace of diamonds to get to my hand for a heart ruff, although Jerry had the A-K-Q, so he had a natural trump trick anyway with his J-x-x-x. Finally, I had S A-K-8-x-x-x H 8-x D A-Q-x-x C x and Ken opened 2H. I was a bit weak for it, but my distribution gave me a rebid no matter what he said, so I bid 2S. He surprised me with 3D, so even with the partscore, I went ahead and bid 4D. He bid 4H, and I took it (correctly) as a cue and bid my spades again. When he bid 5D, denying the ace of clubs (and no surprise), I left it there, with the usual double from Dan. He lost the first club, but his hearts established for a long run with only the top diamond left out after he'd pulled two rounds.

They finally fixed the A/C at work, so I survived and even had a bit of water left for the trip home. Then I had a clever idea. Since I didn't have time this morning to eat a piece of fruit, and my last mango was getting pretty soft, so I decided to cook the fish I'd thawed with the usual ginger and sesame seed preparation, then pour diced mango on top. It worked really well, which was a surprise.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
