Today's Bridge: Bruce was my partner today, but things went pretty well. My first hand was S A-K-J-6-x-x-x H K-x D K C J-10-x, so of course, I opened 4S. It's the perfect hand for it, and Bruce's S Q H x-x-x-x D x-x-x C A-Q-x-x-x was the perfect support, especially when Dan H. started by leading the two red aces. He followed with a second heart, and I had to think about the relative danger of a 4-1 trump split as opposed to the tiny possibility of getting overruffed on the way back to my hand to pull trump. I eventually decided to take the queen first, then ruff a diamond back. The club finesse even worked to give me an overtrick. I pointed out that leading out the aces was probably a bad move, since it gave me a free heart trick, but then, I think any other lead gives me twelve - five clubs and seven spades. Plus, underleading a red ace gives me that vital thirteenth trick with the corresponding king. The next two hands were pretty good defensively - the opponents ended up in 4H when I had all five of the outstanding hearts, preventing Dan from ruffing anything. He showed out in both spades and clubs (Ken had six or seven clubs, so it was pretty obvious Dan was short), so I knew his last card would be a diamond to my king for the setting trick. Then they bid 3S when I had S A-10-8-x H K-6-3-2 D A-K-x C A-x - a 1NT opener that I had to pass in fourth seat because the opponents were clearly going somewhere in spades and I didn't want to make things any easier for them. The opening lead was, to my chagrin, a heart to the king and ace, but Ken laid down S 9-7-5 H x-x D Q-J-x-x C Q-J-x-x and things were looking up. Dan started with the king of spades, and Bruce showed out of trump for the second hand in a row. I decided to take the ace, since my holding guaranteed another natural trump trick if Dan couldn't lead from dummy twice, and he clearly couldn't. I led back a heart, and he took the queen, then tried a diamond. I covered and led a third heart to Bruce's jack and a ruff in dummy, establishing the spade for me. Dan led the nine, which I covered with the ten and he took with the jack. Another diamond ran to my king, and I led my final heart, the six, which turned out to be the top heart. I believe I exited with the low diamond in the hope of preventing Dan from leading from the board through my trump holding, and Dan ruffed Bruce's ten. I think he cashed the top spade at that point, then split the last two tricks with me and my master trump. I probably got the ace of clubs somewhere along the way. I opened 2S with S A-K-J-x-x-x H x-x-x D x-x C J-x or so and Bruce only raised me to 3S with S Q-x H Q-x D K-Q-J-x-x-x C A-Q-x or so. Dan started with the A-x of diamonds, and when Ken followed, I pulled trump, crossed to the ace of clubs, and cashed the diamonds to make six. The opponents followed with a 3H that looked shaky, but made, and then they had a 1NT-2H-2S auction with me in the pass-out seat holding S K-x-x H J-x-x-x D x-x C A-Q-10-x. So I jumped in with 3C. Bruce responded 3D, and I bid 3H, which he passed. I think it was the right move with his S Q-x-x H A-x-x D Q-x-x-x C 8-x-x. Dan started with the A-x of spades, and I crossed to the ace of hearts, then a heart to Ken's queen. He led a third spade for Dan to ruff, and he led the nine of clubs to Ken's jack and my queen. I led a club toward the eight, drawing Dan's king, and he cashed two diamonds, then switched to another club. I got the ten and crossruffed until the king came out, ending up with seven tricks - not enough to make the contract, but a decent score for saving the rubber, although we might have set 2S with those hands.

Today's Work: I discovered only today that the copy of the repository on my new laptop wasn't versioned, so I started checking it out properly. It's a long process, though, so I didn't manage to get through it. I would have stayed a bit later, but they turned off the power in the building right about when I was scheduled to leave, so I had to go. It gave me the time to get the final Gobliiins video ready to post, so at least that's a plus. Of course, I'm up late enough that I'm probably going to have a rough morning tomorrow, but when do I not?

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
