Today's Bridge: We had enough regulars to play today, and I was determined not to suck horribly. I failed. 4H off seven should tell you pretty much everything. I even conspired to take a 3S with ten cold tricks and set up a complicated gambit that gave me a chance at a tenth trick. Not kidding - the auction was 2H-P-3H, and with S A-Q-J-9-x H J-x-x D Q-10-x C J-x, I felt that a 3S bid was appropriate. (This was probably the least bad bid I made until the final hand - the bidding indicates that the opponents are pretty weak, and my partner can't have more than one heart.) Dummy gave me S 10-8-x-x H x D x-x-x C A-K-Q-x-x, which was considerably more than I could have hoped for but about what I expected. Fearing that the opening nine of clubs was a singleton, I took the ace immediately and ran the eight of spades, figuring that without the spade finesse, the contract was dead anyway. It held, so I finessed the queen and cashed the ace, carefully leaving the ten on the board and the nine in my hand. At this point, I had five spades and five clubs in the bag - I just needed to cash the jack of clubs, then cross to that ten of spades I'd set up and run the clubs. Instead, I decided to lead a low heart, hoping to set up a diamond as long as nine tricks were guaranteed and the contract was in no danger. Fortunately, the jack of diamonds was to my right, so the finesse worked and I got the queen, so I got my overtrick anyway, but the poor decision to try it in the first place was embarrassing. At least the last hand worked out - having finally scored our game, Dan H. opened 1NT, and with S x-x-x-x H A-x-x-x D K-Q-x C Q-x or so, I bid 2C (Stayman), got a 2S response, and jumped to 4S, which Dan made pretty easily.

I had some fun with April Fools' Day, but I also got a good reminder of the importance of joking responsibly. For once, I don't mean that I told an inappropriate joke. I'm talking about the feature that GMail added that caused problems for a lot of users. And Google usually does such fun stuff, too. At least there were some fun jokes this year.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
