Today's Bridge: Most of the crew were late to the party, so I grabbed a trainee and we played a few hands as lessons. The opponents started with two straight 3NTs (after I convinced trainee Doreen not to pass on a 16-point hand with A-K-J-x-x-x of diamonds), then we struck back with a 5C and a 4C. I ended up making five on the latter with S A H x-x D Q-J-10 C K-Q-10-x-x-x-x facing S K-x-x H Q-x-x D A-x-x-x C A-x-x - I opened 1C, Ken jumped to 2D, I bid 3C, he picked 3NT, and having told Doreen earlier that you usually pass a 3NT, I corrected to 4C anyway. I think it was for the best, since we get stomped in notrump if the opponents cash hearts. Instead, Doreen started with her singleton diamond, and I decided to take the ace immediately, cross to the ace of spades, pull trump ending in dummy, and throw a heart on the king of spades. If the opponents start with two hearts, I can't possibly avoid losing the king of diamonds as well. That would be the way to defend 5C, but defending 4, I think going for the diamond ruff is the right way. It's the only possible source of a fourth trick. Finally, Ken was all set for a difficult 1NT when Doreen rescued into 2D, off a couple because I had a fairly strong hand with four diamonds to the jack and good spades. I believe Ken's actual holding was S 6-4 H K-x-x-x-x D x C Q-J-x-x-x and mine was S A-J-10-x H Q-x D J-x-x-x C A-K-8. I opened 1D, Doreen overcalled 1S, Ken responded 1NT, and Doreen switched to 2D. Had she left us in 1NT, I would expect a spade lead, and it took me a while to channel my inner Mollo to find the way to make the contract - take the ace immediately. Doreen's marked for five spades, so Dan can have at most two. Now he leads either a low heart toward the king, or just the queen of hearts. That establishes a heart to go with the five clubs and the spade. Unfortunately, now that I think of it, the opponents will be able to run four diamonds and two spades, enough to set us, but Dan might try a second spade, and the J-10-x is a stopper. It's about the only chance we have.

Today's Work: Some unexpected news that I can't really share, and we finally started running through the test procedures, only to discover that we're missing some of the files we need, and then the program crashed a few times. I'm hoping we can reproduce that and figure out exactly what went wrong.

I got the handheld LCD Bridge game, but I don't have any spare AAA batteries. I'll have to pick some up either tomorrow or over the weekend. At least it's a good problem to have.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
