Today's Bridge: Dan C. and I took on Paul and Kevin, and I'm pretty sure we came out on top even though I cheaped out in one hand - I had something like S K-x H A-J-x D K-x C Q-x-x-x-x-x. Kevin opened 3D and Dan doubled, so I bid 4C, and he raised to 5C. I was really tempted to raise to slam, but I held back - the opponents had just underbid a game and were sitting on top of a big partscore, so we needed to cut it off. Dan had S Q-J-x H K-10-x D A-x-x C A-K-J-x or thereabouts, and Kevin led the queen of hearts, so I just laid my hand down and conceded the ace of spades. In another hand, Paul opened 1C when I had S A-x-x H K-Q-x D Q-x C K-Q-10-9-x. Even though the diamonds were weak, I decided 1NT was the most descriptive bid, and Dan raised me to 2NT, where I left it. His hand was S K-10-x H J-10-x-x D K-J-10-x C x-x, so I had lots of tricks available once I'd cleared out those aces. Kevin started with a spade, so I took the ace - there didn't seem to be much point in holding up and advertising weakness in the suit, and I could easily hold up the second spade and accomplish just as much. I ran the queen of diamonds, which held, then crossed to the ten and led the jack, finally pulling the ace from Paul. He led a club, and my king held the trick. I cashed my heart honors, again unopposed, which left me only two tricks short of my target. That established, I crossed to the king of spades and cashed the last top diamond to make the contract. The opponents underbid another game, and then we got into a heated auction where Dan opened 2D, I let it go with S Q H A-7-6-5-4-3-2 D A-x-x C x-x, Kevin balanced with 2S, Dan shifted over his own pre-empt with 3C, Paul bid 3S, I decided to go for 4H, Dan bid 4NT, and Paul bid 5S. The auction really didn't support that, so I doubled, and we ended up taking only the four aces. I was going to correct to 5D had Paul not intervened, and it's likely that 4D was a better bid, but I took the opponents to be super-long in spades and figured Dan likely had some heart support despite being 6-5 or 6-4 in the minors. I think we had a great shot at 5D, even - the crossruff potential is pretty good and the opponents have a lot of wasted power in the majors.

Today's Work: What sounded like a simple assignment turned out to be really complicated, since I needed to receive a message from a device, but the message didn't meet the specified format. Nor did it actually look like a message at all. It had all the information I needed, but in a big lump. So I had to add exceptions to all of our message processing to look for that lump and handle it properly, then add all the actual processing that we need to do with that information, and THEN make additional changes based on that. So that was most of the day right there.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
