Today's Bridge: We grabbed another one of our learners to fill the fourth seat and got to business. I managed to make 3C with S J-x-x-x H A-Q-x-x D x C 9-x-x-x opposite Dan C.'s S 2 H K-J-x-x D A-J-x-x C A-K-x-x. I think Ken opened 1S to my right, I passed, Matt bid 1NT, Dan passed, Ken bid 2S, pass, pass, and Dan bid 2NT. I think a double was more appropriate at either opportunity, but I figured he wanted me to pick a suit and bid 3C, planning to switch to 3H if he bid 3D and end up in 3NT if we had to. Fortunately, he really was interested in any suit I picked. The opening lead was a diamond, so I took the ace, ruffed a diamond, then pulled two rounds of trump, leaving only the jack out. Then I cashed four rounds of hearts, and Matt ruffed the last one and led a spade. After losing the first spade, I crossruffed, and I think the board's last diamond won for two overtricks. A later hand was a lot more hectic - I had S A-7-x-x-x H J-x D J-9-8-7-x C x, but the opponents were bidding competitively, so when I got the chance, I bid 1S and then 2D. That was the contract, and Dan had S Q H 10-x-x-x D x-x-x C K-Q-J-x-x. The opening lead was a club to the king and ace, and I think Ken must have cashed the king of diamonds before switching to the king of spades, because I know that got led at some point and this is the only point when it makes sense. I covered the king of spades, then ruffed a spade so I could cash the top two clubs, sluffing both of my hearts. Then I ruffed a heart and ruffed another spade, another heart back, leaving me with S 7-x D J-9 and seven tricks under my belt. With no better options, I led the nine of diamonds to Matt's ace and Ken's ten, and Matt led a heart back. Whether Ken ruffs or not, the jack of diamonds is my eighth trick - in the event, he did. That game was about all the scoring we did - although we set their final contract by one trick. I screwed up the defense in a 4C by shortening my spades to hang on to the K-x of hearts. I even counted and knew that if Matt had the ace of hearts, he had ten tricks, so I had to count on Dan to cover the hearts and keep my spades. Instead, the jack of spades was their tenth trick. Ugh.

Today's Work: More tricky tasks, which will hopefully cover my stays at home this coming week. I'm looking forward to them.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
