Today's Bridge: I was actually too involved in something to notice the time, but they only had three people, so they came and got me. I declared a 3NT that I don't think could fail no matter what I did, although I tried: I had S A-Q-10-x-x H A-10 D Q-8-7 C K-Q-x, so I opened 1S, Jerry responded with a predictable 2H, and I jumped to 3NT. He had H J-x-x-x-x D A-J-6-5-3 C A-x-x, so it was a bit complicated, but Ken led the four of diamonds and Dan H. sluffed a spade, giving me the seven and a clear picture of the diamond layout. I led the queen to the king and ace, and should have led a club back to finesse the eight to guarantee four diamond tricks, because Ken still had 10-9-2, but I forgot about the two and cashed the jack, on which he threw the ten just to be fancy. Oops. So I threw a diamond to him and he led back a heart, which I took with the ace, and three clubs, the ace of spades, and the top diamond were good for the contract, plus I got the queen of spades at the end. The reason I say it was impossible to fail is that I don't think I could get away with fewer than three tricks in the majors to go with three clubs and four diamonds (if played properly), just based on the strength of my holdings. The worst they can do is attack hearts first, but the jack is an almost certain stopper, especially if I cover the first honor. The opponents also had a game under their belts, and we each scored 40 - Jerry with a 1NT, Dan with a 2D that looked settable, but I think it was solid. My final hand was S Q-x H A-K-9-x-x-x-x D x-x C K-x or so, which I opened 3H to prevent Ken from overcalling cheaply. Jerry had S J-x-x H J-x D K-J-x-x-x C J-x-x, which is a lot of jack. I couldn't see a way to avoid losing two spades and one of everything else, although it's possible the hearts would have split. The diamond finesse could have worked, and if the diamonds also split 3-3, I can sluff a spade on the king of diamonds, but the heart split is probably the best bet. Shame I didn't try it.

Today's Work: I got a new task that's proving to be pretty challenging, mostly because I want to believe there's a better way to do it than the way I spent most of the day pondering. There are basically two solutions, neither of which I really like, but I'll probably opt for the most general one.

Anyone remember when I used to write fanfiction? I came up with a quote today that I needed to base a story around, just like the old days, but now, instead of anime, it's Steven Universe. I came up with a few more ideas on the way home, and then today's new episode (which I watched as it aired) filled in one of the biggest gaps that stood in the way of my plot coming together. The next time I have the time to spare, I'll try to write at least the beginning of it. I'm falling behind on both my own LP and the ones I'm watching, but I should be able to write while watching videos, at least. That's how I wrote this entry.

Signature

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
