Today's Bridge: We had four, so Dan C. and I took on Paul and Dan H. I was disappointed in the first hand, where I had 18 and six diamonds opposite Dan's opening bid. I was looking for a slam, but he ended up leaving me in 4D. We were missing both black aces, but the opponents didn't take the ace of clubs and I was able to sluff the clubs on hearts and spades for two overtricks. We should have been in game. I picked up a 3D for the game, after we set a disastrous 4NT where Paul wasn't prepared for the defensive splits - I had six clubs to Q-J and four diamonds to the jack, and he rather helplessly cashed his winners and threw to me so I could cash clubs and lead my last heart to Dan so he could claim his king of spades. Off only two doubled, amazingly - they had a lot of power. Then we finished the rubber with a 3NT that I pushed for on S Q-x-x-x H A-9-x-x D A-K-x C A-x facing S K-x-x H K-10-x D Q-x-x C x-x-x-x. The opening lead was a spade to Dan's nine, and I considered ducking but ended up rising with the queen, since Paul probably had the ace. I've got five more on top, and I figured my best shot was to set up a heart, so I finessed the ten and lost to the queen. I was hoping Dan would lead back a spade, but he led a club, so I took the ace and led a heart to the king, picking up Paul's jack on the way. That gave me two more hearts, so I took the nine and immediately led a spade toward the king. Paul held up the ace, so the king of spades was my fifth trick. With three diamonds and the ace of hearts left, that was game. We ended with a hand where Dan opened 1C opposite my S Q-x H A-J-x D x-x C A-x-x-x-x-x or so. I jumped to 3C, which almost seems a bit weak, and he rather inexplicably bid 3H. Probably showing a second suit, but with agreement in clubs, I think that rather denies a heart fit. I jumped right to 5C, unwilling to miss another game, and while I think we might have had a play for it, it looked like a tough contract that would have required Dan to clear a suit or two and then throw in an opponent with their second trick to force an advantageous lead that would eliminate the third loser.

Today's Work: More tasks, mostly hampered by my difficulties communicating with one of the devices we just got in even though I was using the same driver as before. I finally figured out that it didn't work with a direct connection, and a switch fixed the problem. I managed to do the testing I needed with it and get started on a high-priority task with another device that just got delivered. It's never fun when all of the hardware shows up right at the end.

There was another accident on the road to work and a clinic run after I got home, so it's been another very short evening. I'm getting used to that.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
