Kevin's reading some Victor Mollo. That should make things interesting.

Today's Bridge: Kevin and I teamed up against Dan C. and Paul, and the centerpiece of the rubber was two 2NTs in a row. Kevin opened the first one, and I had all of S 9-2 H x-x D J-5-4-3-2 C Q-10-9-8 to offer him. I considered raising even so, but didn't, and he made it exactly. (That might be because the nine of spades was good for the first trick and he covered with the ace anyway.) Mine was S J H K-x-x D K-Q-J-x C 10-x-x-x-x. Kevin opened 1S, and I scraped a 2C, 2H, 2NT. What he had was S K-10-x-x-x H A-J-8-x D x-x C A-x. Joy. The opening lead was a diamond to Paul's ace, and he understandably led back a diamond, so I took it with the king to disguise the rest of my holding. I've got six tricks with another in hearts if the finesse works or they split, so I went for the finesse right away. I took the risk of leading a low heart, and Dan went up with the queen to falsecard me. I took the ace and led back to the king, finding Dan with one more, then back to the ace and I threw the eight to Paul's ten, sluffing a club. Naturally, he led another diamond, so I cashed the two I had, throwing spades, then led the jack of spades and hoped. Queen, king, low. That was seven, so I cashed the ace of clubs and conceded the rest. We set the opponents in 4S that I probably should have doubled, and there was a really interesting auction where Paul bid hearts when I had six hearts to the ace and was planning to bid them - I decided to bid my four-card spades instead, and Dan raised the suit. They ended up in 4C and made it with two overtricks that I don't think were in question. The 4S was interesting, though - I didn't double because I had S K-x H A-K-Q-x-x-x D A-10 C Q-x-x or so. The opening lead was a singleton heart, and I ran all three honors while Kevin sluffed diamonds. When I ran the ace and led to his king, he didn't have a diamond left because he'd held all five of his clubs with A-K doubleton and plenty of trump in dummy. If I'd taken the heart and high-lowed right away, we could have picked up the first seven tricks - ace of hearts, A-K of diamonds, diamond ruff, heart ruff, diamond ruff (I think the board had three diamonds, so my king of spades will take the trick), heart ruff. But that depends on me finding Kevin with that king of diamonds. As it was, the king of spades was finessable, but Dan led the ace from his hand, so we set them three.

It was another sort of late day and I had to run errands after I got home, so another evening with no free time has come and gone. Sigh. At least the weekend should be mostly free - the chores should be really frontloaded on Saturday.
