Making the best I can of a very late day

Today's Bridge: I didn't screw up as badly as I did yesterday, and I even made a slam. I opened 1NT with S A-J-x H Q-x-x D K-Q-x C A-9-x-x and Jerry bid 4C (Gerber). The auction proceeded pretty naturally - 4S-5C-5H-6NT. He had S K-x-x H A-K-x-x D A-x-x C K-J-x, which puts us within shooting distance of grand slam, but he did well to stop at small. I've got ten top tricks and no safe ways to look for more - I took the heart lead in hand, then crossed to the board in hearts, which was safe enough - since I'm taking one finesse into each opponent's hand, if the split is 4-2, the same opponent can't knock out my ace and then get the long heart. I had to take the finesses before testing the splits, to avoid giving up another trick if the first one lost. The jack of spades held, and then so did the jack of clubs, so the contract was made at 25% odds. Even better, when I cashed the ace of hearts, Dan C. threw a club, so the nine established for the thirteenth trick even though neither of my four-card suits split 3-3. I had a bit less fortune in 1S - S A-Q-J-10-x-x H A-K D Q-J C 10-x-x facing S 9-2 H Q-J-x-x D x-x-x-x C Q-J-x. I think that's worth a 1NT response, but I think we'll end up in 2S anyway, and the opponents can take the first five tricks off the top (two clubs, a club ruff, and two diamonds) and Ken still has K-x-x of spades to my left for a guaranteed trump trick. As it was, he took one diamond at trick four, then switched to a heart. My best option, I think, is to cash the other heart in my hand, lead a spade toward the nine, and if it holds (it did), I can cash a top heart and sluff my other diamond for an overtrick. I don't know whether that would have worked, but as it was, I just made 1. The opponents made game in the first two hands with two 90s (plus overtricks, I think), and we set them once or twice after that. One was a 3H by Ken, in which I had S Q-x-x H A-Q-x D x-x-x C K-x-x-x or so. Jerry started with a spade, Dan flopped S 10-x H 10 D K-Q-x-x-x C A-x-x-x-x, my queen held the trick, and I considered leading to Jerry's marked spade honors, but I didn't know what trump he had, so I led the ace of hearts instead, pulling his king. Oops. A spade back to his hand and another top spade secured a two-trick set, so all was good. Then Dan got into a pretty hopeless 3H contract where I forced the ace of trump from the board with my ten, allowing me to get my king separately from Jerry's Q-J. The hand may have partly played itself, but I think Jerry did a really good job with the defense and made sure to tell him so.

Today's Bridge: I generalized some stuff I did earlier so it will work for any input that provides the functionality it needs without requiring extra work. Of course, the inputs other than the one I was using didn't implement the interface, even though they implemented a function that does the same thing as the interface method, so I had to do some extra work for it anyway. I think that was an oversight.

It's possible that I'll be able to do a Psychonauts commentary tonight. I got a notice that a water main broke in our neighborhood and we're under a boil water order until tomorrow evening, so brushing my teeth will be either counterproductive or more effort than usual. I probably won't, though.

You can always use bottled water. Wet the brush, do your thing, use swigs of bottled water to rinse mouth and brush. I have had many occasions when I had no choice but to use bottled water...every time there was a hurricane.

I've only got flavored bottled water. Probably counterproductive to rinse with that.

Page Summary

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
