Today's Bridge: The first rubber was pretty competitive, starting with me passing an 11-point hand, then bumping Ken's eventual 2NT invite to 3NT, which he made with an overtrick. The opponents two-putted their way to victory with me making a 2H in the middle, and I don't think I played it as well as I could have - I had S A-x-x H Q-x-x-x-x D x-x C A-9-8 or so and Ken had S K-Q-x-x-x H K-J-x D J C Q-10-x-x. Frankly, I think spades are the better trump suit, since his long spades cover the diamond singleton better than the short hearts do, and I erred in ruffing my second diamond rather than just pulling trump so I could use the long spades to sluff that and a club, losing only the diamond, the ace of trump, and one club. We ended the rubber with a spot-on 4S where Ken opened 1S and I had S A-K-Q-x-x - and nothing else of note. Q-x-x of clubs, too, so I bid 3S, and although he was minimal, he raised to game and made it exactly. The opponents started the next rubber with an auction that went to 4D, and when Dan H. tried to close in 4NT, Paul bid 5D, and while I had Q-J-x-x of diamonds and didn't think they'd make it, I decided not to double. Good thing, because Paul had only A-x of diamonds and Dan had three. They had plenty of power, but no trump, and Ken and I scored a decent crossruff for off four. Had I doubled, Paul would most likely have corrected to spades, and while they probably don't make that either, they might hold it to off one for 100 if one of us doubles, rather than the 200 we got.

It was otherwise weird being back at work after being away for so long, but I met with my supervisor for my performance review, and it was as good as I expected it to be. I haven't gone out of my way to do things above my position this year, but I did my job very well and got what I feel I deserved for doing it. That's what matters to me - knowing that I'm valued for what I provide and not necessarily for what I could provide under other circumstances. I really do need to get to some training, though, which may be my course of action if the weather keeps me in tomorrow. It's supposed to be freezing rain starting overnight and lasting well into tomorrow, and the ground is already icy from the recent snows.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
