Today's Bridge: The opposition started with a 4S making 7, which I think was entirely biddable, so Dan C. answered by leaping to 3NT when I bid 1H over his 1D. I did that because I had two diamonds, five hearts, and a king and a jack, neither in hearts. He made it with a trick to spare, though. The opponents went for 6H, and knowing that Dan H. had a club stopper to my left, I led a club and established Dan's king to go with my ace of diamonds for the set. I overcalled a 2 opener with 3C with only a 13-point hand, and Dan raised me to 4C with weak but long support, and I managed to make it. The opponents answered with 3S and an overtrick (to be fair, we had a diamond winner that we failed to cash), and I decided to go bold with something like S Q-x-x-x H K-x-x-x D K-J-x-x-x in third seat. I opened 1D, figuring that if Dan had a decent holding in anything but clubs, we had a play for it. We ended up in 2D with his S x-x-x H J-9-x D A-x-x C A-J-10-x or so, and I managed to make it. For some reason, after I crossed to the ace of trump and cashed the ace of clubs to sluff a heart, the opponents decided to hold on to their clubs instead of spades, leaving me an extra spade at the end for trick eight. With the rubber won, we played one final hand, and I overcalled Paul's 2H with 3C with S A-K-Q H K-x-x D x-x C J-10-x-x-x - mediocre for bidding at that level, but my king is much stronger. 3H-4C-4H followed, and I doubled that, figuring on at least two spades, the king of hearts, and whatever Dan had. All three spades held, followed by the jack of clubs to pull the ace and establish Dan's king. We got another trick somewhere along the line for off three. I was proud of my double.

Today's Work: I arrived to find my computer problem fixed, so I was able to get to the lab to test with actual hardware. There were some problems, as would be expected, and I fixed the ones I could in the time I had. One feature that I thought depended on hardware still doesn't seem to be available even using the company's own software, so I think I may be missing something. One or two others aren't exactly working as intended, but I'll poke at those when I get back to work. I'm running into some possible weaknesses in Java in a few places, so I have to play with those if I have time. Most of the things I want to fix aren't exactly going to break the system if I leave them as they are. At least my to-do list should be a few items shorter by the end of the week. I heard there would be more snow tonight, but it seems like that's going to be to the north, so I'm lucking out so far. There's a small possibility that this will actually be an okay winter. But the city has suspended garbage service, probably because it's too cold for people to be working outdoors for that long, so it's not exactly beautiful for everyone.

I should be doing some LP recording work, but I keep getting survey calls. I should just disconnect the phone. I so rarely get calls that I want that I don't think I'd miss them all that much.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
