The Book of Daniel has certainly taken an unexpected turn

Today's Bridge: Ken and I pretty distinctly came out on top, even though he misplayed the initial 4S - he pulled an extra round of trump after they split, when he needed the additional crossruff. Luckily, he handed me a pretty easy 6D - I had S x-x-x-x H A-Q D K-Q-J-9 C J-x-x, so I opened 1D, and he responded 2NT - an eight-card fit, which requires at least five diamonds, and an opening hand of his own. I was minimal for my bid (not really liking the queen of hearts), so I bid 3D, and he cue-bid 3S, so I saw no choice but to bid 4H and force the game. Instead, he went straight to 6D with S A H K-x-x D A-x-x-x-x-x C A-Q-x. An admirable assessment of the hand with a slight shortage of high cards, but great distribution. I pulled two rounds of trump on the diamond lead, cashed the hearts from my hand, and ran the jack of clubs through - when the king was onside, I claimed all thirteen tricks, even though I didn't need a second finesse - I cross to the ace and sluff my third club on the king of hearts. The opponents had some sad hands, but still managed to make a few decent partscores along the way, including a 2S where declarer had six spades (A-K-Q-J-10-x) and I had five, with Ken holding the other two. He had an ace and managed to get two more tricks in the side suits to make an overtrick. I believe we ended with a 4H Dbl, making exactly - I had two doubleton jacks among my meager points, one of them in hearts, but it was enough to get the job done. I think Ken had an opportunity to get an overtrick or at least make the contract a bit more secure by preserving an entry in my A-K-x-x of spades to get to the A-Q-x-x-x of diamonds after cashing his singleton king - pulling trump left Dan holding 10-8 and Ken Q-9-x-x, so he needed to lead through Dan and score a trump coup. Fortunately, he managed to put Dan in the lead with a club when he had only hearts and diamonds left, so he was endplayed.

I spent most of the day trying to get some things on my laptop working - for various reasons, I wasn't able to use ssh, and I couldn't use subversion to get to the repository I need to use, although I could get to the one on our network just fine. Once I had everything downloaded, I tried to compile the project, but I'm missing some dependency that it only just now occurs to me was probably internal to the project. I know what I'm doing tomorrow. Today was a very early day, so maybe I can get an early start tomorrow as well and have time in the evening to get something done. I have things to do in the evening, for sure.
