Today's Bridge: I drew the ace of spades for seating, so of course, I got the seat but got terrible hands. Right? The first hand was a horrible 2D opener, with terrible spots and the A-K of diamonds. I only bid at all because I had ten red cards. The opponents (both Dans) got into a 3C Dbl off four. That was New Dan passing Dan's bid with A-K-Q-x-x-x of hearts in his hand. With me holding most of the hearts and Mike holding most of the clubs and spades, they were in real trouble. Then I got a natural 2NT: S A-K-x H 10-x-x D A-Q-x C A-Q-J-x. Sadly, Mike had nothing but five clubs, and New Dan had the remaining four. I could probably have conceded off two the way it played, but I held my honors, hoping for a finesse, and went off three. The opponents picked up 80 in two partscores, and then I had S A-K-x H Q-x D A-K-x C Q-J-x-x-x. I opened 1C, New Dan overcalled 1H (predictably), Dan responded 1S, and I had to bid 2C. I'm plenty strong enough. New Dan bid 2H, and Mike bid 3C, so when Dan bid 3H, I decided to risk 4C. Dan doubled that quite confidently, and Mike had S x-x-x-x H x-x D J-10-9-x C K-9-x. New Dan's diamond lead pulled Dan's queen, giving me the contract. He took the ace of clubs on the second round, then led another diamond, so I just had to pull Dan's last club, sluff a heart on the last diamond, and concede the other heart and a spade. With a game under our belts, Mike opened 1C and Dan overcalled 1D. I had S 9-x-x-x H x-x-x D Q-x C K-10-9-8, so I decided to fudge a 1S bid. Mike jumped to 3S, and I had to pass that. Off one - Mike had S A-Q-x-x H A-K-x D K-x-x C J-x-x. New Dan led a club to Dan's ace, and Dan led back a low club, which I let run to New Dan's queen. He led a third club, which Dan ruffed with the king, and Dan led back the ten to the board's queen. I cashed the ace hopefully, but Dan showed out, leaving New Dan with the jack. I miscounted and thought he had J-8 left. I managed to cross to the queen of diamonds so I could cash the ten of clubs and sluff a heart, but I still had the ace of diamonds and the jack of spades to lose. Still, not too bad a job.
Work was slow, since I was confined to base, but I got a few very important things done. The detour was annoying, but not all that bad since it was (hopefully) just the once. I even stopped at Subway on the way home to save a bit of time. Now I've got only one Archdemon to kill in Demon's Souls, if I play it tonight, which I might. The last set of videos I've got cued up aren't particularly interesting, so I might cut them short and do my audio cleanup instead.
