Today's Bridge: The first hand was incredibly disappointing. I maintain that I did everything right: With S A H K-x-x-x D K C A-K-Q-J-10-x-x, I felt compelled to open 2C. I'm a bit weak for it, but those clubs are worth nearly 5C themselves, and I can't let this go for less than game. Brandy consulted the sheet, correctly looking it up as the Strong 2C convention, and responded with a very strong 2S. Essentially, that should be a slam forcing bid. So I responded 3C, wanting to know more about his hand. He passed. HE PASSED. And he only had the two of clubs. Fortunately, my hand was plenty strong to carry the contract, and then some - opposite his S Q-J-x-x-x-x H A-Q-x D A-x-x C 2, I don't think the opponents can prevent us from making a grand slam. I pulled the queen on the opening spade lead just to draw the king, but I don't need that to come out. I get the ace of spades, two diamonds, three hearts, and seven clubs guaranteed. On a bid of three. We set them a few tricks once they'd made a game, but behind on vulnerability, we were pretty helpless. To be fair, it was Brandy's first 2C auction, and I went over it with him afterward... if he'd started with 3S, or bid again after my 3C, I'd have gone into Blackwood, and with the confirmation of both red aces, I'd have gone to 7C. Even if Brandy didn't have the queen of hearts, I can still try to set up the long spades with a pair of ruffs, covering the king of diamonds with the ace to establish a second entry there. Sure, that's the risk of another trick lost if the spades don't split, but it's probably the best chance to make the contract. (I'd avoid the draw play and leave the two honors on the board, then probably try the ruffing finesse on the first play. With only two board entries, I have to make that king fall early or I'll run out of entries before the opponents run out of spades for sure. I need that jack to be able to cover if it's a 4-2 split. I think Brandy had the 9, so if Paul plays the 10 on the opening lead, we're still in good shape that way.)

Today's Work: It looks like the Office install half-finished, but they also didn't bother to install that memory upgrade on Friday, when I gave them the whole afternoon to do it. So they did that today, requiring me to shut off the computer, plus there was a reboot for upgrades, and the Office 2007 install desperately wanted to finish. It looks like it installed the applications, but didn't clean up 2003, so most of the programs worked until Outlook randomly decided to stop opening E-mails, crashing whenever I tried. So I scheduled the install to run again tonight (if it can be bothered to do that, which it never does), and I'll see how it looks tomorrow. At least it should be at the point where it only takes four hours instead of four days.

I finished the Harry Potter audiobooks again this morning and, for some reason, felt compelled to start The Divine Comedy again next. Not sure whether I'll bother to keep listening past the Inferno this time... Purgatorio might be worth the time, but Paradiso was crap. 13th century astronomy hasn't stood the test of time, and I think Neil Armstrong, at least, would take issue with Dante's proof that the Moon has no physical substance. I'm sure the religious folk think it's a good way to end the story, but it's really boring compared to the fact that there was actually some action in the early parts, and things worth describing. Plus, nobody's going to make a game about the third part.

Day 25 - Best anime villian

You have to ask? Potamos is the greatest villain ever, EVER. Not that she's particularly effective - on a mission to wipe out all love on Earth, she ends up falling in love herself, and with the heroine's boyfriend no less - but I think she was the most effective of all the villains in Wedding Peach. She certainly lasted about the longest, and came to about the best end of all of them. But she's so cute about the whole thing. Her "mitai na" catchphrase simply rules, especially when they play around with it for a punchline. She even keeps up the cute when she gets pissed off. Then she puts up a pretty good fight.

Sadly, it's rare for anything in manga to live up to the cuteness of its anime counterpart, and Potamos didn't do much in the Wedding Peach manga anyway. I've got to take the unconventional route and go with Light Yagami. Maybe he's more an anti-hero than a villain, but I don't think I can consider him anything but a straight up villain protagonist. He wants to rule the world as a god, and he kills people to do it. How can that be even the slightest bit heroic? Yet, as the protagonist, he's cunning, manipulative, and fun to watch. He sets up plans that won't come to fruition for volumes down the line. And the end of the manga series was awesome. The end of the anime pretty much did everything it could to eliminate the awesomeness and just be the end. Anime, I am disappoint.
