I have to write about them even if they're not my cup of tea.

Today's Bridge: The opponents did most of the scoring, and even then, it was all pretty much nothing compared to the final hand, where Mike opened 1H and Paul overcalled 1S, and Kevin passed. With S x-x D J-10-x-x-x-x C 6-5-4-3-2 (not kidding at all), there was nothing I could do but pass. Mike bid 1NT, and Paul bid a rather unhelpful 2H. I had to bid something, and saw little choice but to go to 3D. He bid 3H, forcing me up another level to 4C. He corrected to 4D, but his hand was S K-10-9-x-x H A-Q-10-9-x D A-2 C x or so... I don't remember his exact spade holding because it turned out to be irrelevant. Mike started with a club, then the ace of spades, finishing with a low spade, which I had to cover. Unsure whether I'd get back to the board later, I elected to run the ace of hearts, then ruff a spade to my hand, pulling the remaining ones from the opponents. What I probably should have done then was run a crossruff in clubs and hearts to use the board's two diamonds, effectively conceding the king and queen, but I ran the jack and let Mike's king have it, and he led another diamond, which failed to drop the queen. When he got in with that, he led a club, and Kevin had plenty more to set me four tricks. The club ruff prevents that and sees me forcing Mike to lead hearts, setting me up a few tricks on the board. It's even more effective if I don't cash the ace early.

Today's Work: They discovered that my computer was probably taking so long to install because it had less than half of the required memory. They had an upgrade handy, but hadn't gotten around to installing it yet. I had to hard power-down the computer to make it stop the install, and didn't feel like hanging around and trying to work on a kiosk (if I could find one that had the program I needed), so I came home barely in time to catch the lunch special at Aver's. I gave Curt one of the slices of Barbecue Chicken, because it was really good and I thought he should try it. Also, I didn't want to eat four slices of pizza on a Friday, but ordered them all anyway. Habit.

As for Taco Bell, I went alone because Curt was waiting for a call. They were playing an obvious "Halloween" mix, which went from the Edward Scissorhands theme to "Batty Bat" (a Count von Count number) to "Love Potion No. 9" to "Purple People Eater". I'm not kidding. Then, on the way out, some guy was asking for money to buy gas because he was apparently completely out and had lost his wallet. Had his car been at the gas station, I was willing to pay for some gas, but he said it was at an apartment complex. Good luck getting the gas into it from there, guy.

I've never really been a fan of either, so why not take a slightly different approach to this one and give my top pick for each, across all of anime and manga?

My pick for the male pairing has to be Mitsuo and Hasunuma from Eerie Queerie. Sure, it's a relationship based partly on a lie (Mitsuo being possessed by a female ghost who confesses her love for Hasunuma), but as Hasunuma starts taking an interest in protecting Mitsuo from further possession, their relationship becomes more like love. It follows the same pattern as most of the few boys' love series I've been able to read, where Mitsuo is always uncomfortable about the whole thing (is that what women find attractive about it? I've never been able to understand it), but at least there's more to this one than the usual inscrutable force that drives the uke to the seme (did I get that right? I don't know or care about this). Hasunuma's presence is actually keeping the spirits away, which forces them to be close all the time. I don't think that really makes it any more palatable, but at least it's something. Are there any male-male pairings out there where they both consent? I can think of maybe one, and that's not particularly overt or romantic. Just sort of a thing if you're looking for things.

CLAMP School Defenders: Duklyon get an honorable mention for being humorous about it.

As for female pairings, I'm not really sure what criterion to use. There are things I like about plenty of pairs, and not a whole lot of "yuri" involved in most of them. Not many cuter pairs out there than Sakura and Tomoyo, but they're a little young to have proper romantic feelings. I think the same could probably be said for most of Strawberry Panic, although I think those girls are at least at an age where it's believable. I suppose there's always the old standby of Uranus and Neptune, who are some of the coolest lesbians out there even if their relationship isn't necessarily my favorite. My pick, though, has to be Hazumu and Yasuna from Kashimashi. It works for me mainly because Hazumu used to be a boy, but he becomes a girl enough to count for the purposes of this question, I think. At least as much as Megumi in Cheeky Angel, anyway, and she ended up giving into her girly nature. Why Yasuna and not Tomari? Well, Tomari liked Hazumu while he was still a boy, while Yasuna didn't return his feelings until he was a girl. That's more of a girl/girl thing. And they made an interesting pair... Tomari was the Betty to Hazumu's Archie, and Yasuna was Veronica. I think we all know how THAT turned out. Personally, I liked Betty more, and I think Tomari's the preferred partner in my book, but I liked Hazumu and Yasuna together. Just because I want a certain type of relationship doesn't mean it's right for everyone.

Honorable mention on this one goes to Kurumi and Saki from Steel Angel Kurumi. Okay, that was also one-sided, and Saki was basically forced into it, but she's so cute about it that I don't see how anyone could fail to love seeing them together.
