Today's Bridge: It was a good day to watch a game of Bridge from my seat at the table. I declared one hand, a 3S that was fortunate to be off only two, and I should probably have left Dan's double of Paul's 3H opener in with S A-K-x-x H K-10-x-x D x-x C x-x-x, but I had some power and four spades. Sadly, he had S 9-x-x H Q D A-K-J-x-x C A-Q-x-x, and BOTH finesses lost. I lost to Ken's king of clubs on the lead, and he returned a club for a ruff from Paul. Paul cashed his ace of hearts, then led a spade, which I had to win with the ace. I ran the king of hearts, sluffing a little club, and Ken sluffed a club as well, hoping to protect his Q-J of trump. Shame... he gets more mileage if he ruffs, tosses Paul a club, and ruffs the next heart as well. I believe I followed by ruffing a heart, and Ken overruffed that one and led his queen of spades, pulling Paul's last one as well. I had to try the diamond finesse to set up a winner to sluff my last heart on, but Ken won that as well, setting me two tricks. The crossruff I mentioned earlier sets me three, but then I don't need the diamond finesse. I think that was the most power I saw all day.

Today's Work: They finally pushed the Office 2007 upgrade to my computer, so I'll be able to use programs like Outlook and Word with other people's files. The problem is that it was running all day and never finished, and I can't log out of the computer (and thus into any other) or run any programs while it's upgrading. If it's still going tomorrow, which I'm told is likely, I'll probably just take off early and come home.

And Curt's been trying to get some new devices online, which was knocking out our Internet connection for a while. It looks like he's given up now. But don't you love when a company offers a warranty only on non-defective merchandise? I'm not kidding.

Day 21 - Best yandere character

Again, I have only a passing understanding of exactly what "yandere" is, but I know my top manga choice is also the top choice of a lot of other people, and I'm not ashamed of it. As for anime, I can't imagine anyone saying anything other than Higurashi, so I have to go with someone else. The most obvious choice, aside from someone I'm reserving for a later entry, would have to be Haruhi Suzumiya. She's cute, she's assertive, and she's completely insane. Hers is more a casual sadism, if it can be called that. She doesn't understand how much her eccentricity can damage the universe, but she's always wishing for more interesting things to happen, and they do. And as we all know, interesting things happening is a recipe for disaster, especially in the world of anime. But a yandere doesn't have to be sadistic, from what I understand - just crazy in some way. Haruhi's extreme interest in the supernatural, and anything at all out of the ordinary, seems to cover that requirement in my mind. The Haruhi in the gag manga is even crazier, and even the original author says she seems more "Haruhi" than the real Haruhi. But this is my choice for best anime yandere character, so... there you have it.

The best manga yandere has to be Yuno Gasai from Future Diary. Anyone who's read the series knows what I'm talking about, but this is a girl obsessed with a boy to a degree that makes the relationships in Twilight seem healthy by comparison. All of the main characters have diaries that give them specialized knowledge, such as future events or the locations and actions of criminals. Yuno's diary just tells her what Yukiteru is doing. That's all she wants to know. And that's only the start of her mental state. Everything she does for the rest of the series revolves around him, including killing. And she'll turn to him, covered in blood, and smile that creepy, creepy smile. Sure, the Higurashi girls have smiles like that, but they're supposedly possessed by an evil god and trying to protect their town from outsiders. Yuno just wants to be part of Yukiteru's life, and sees everything she has to do to achieve that as a proud accomplishment. It's like when your dog rips the throat out of your neighbor's cat, then looks at you as if expecting praise. Except replace all of the animals with people. (I think she kills dogs at some point, but they're killer mutant dogs. I'm not good with details.) Really, I love the plot and the story, but a big part of the appeal of the series is seeing what the hell Yuno's going to do next.

No, I haven't finished Higurashi yet. I'm keeping up with the manga release, but I never make the time to watch anime anymore. Still, if the reality is different from what it appears, and it takes until the end of the story for the truth to come out, I don't think that will change anything. Besides, what am I going to do, say "Higurashi is the greatest thing ever because at the end, this happens and that makes it better!"? That would go over well.

Like I said, my understanding of yandere is that being psychotic isn't a requirement - it's more of a general craziness, and I think Haruhi has that covered well enough. She's definitely tsundere, but anyone who decides that a reality that lacks aliens, espers, and time travelers is too boring for her liking (yet manages to keep herself in check even though she doesn't realize she's surrounded by such people) is definitely touched in the head. The people around her go out of their way to avoid setting her off, not because she'll flip out and kill them, but because they're afraid she'll get bored and rewrite existence. Hence the baseball game and the endless summer. There's no way you can say that's not dangerous.

I'm not sure how you'd feel about a spoiler from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (season two), so I'm putting this in a picture that you can choose not to click on. It should give you an idea of why your statement might attract special attention among people who've seen most of the anime, without spoiling too much of the plot for you. Can you spot the evil god?

I have no idea what you're talking about or why you've posted this picture. You make no sense at all.

Never mind, then.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
