I don't really bother to customize my wallpaper anymore, so I'll have to take a pass on that part of the question. As for recent anime wallpapers, I think I've only ever had one, and that was just a picture of Tsukushi from Hana Yori Dango surrounded by chibi portraits of the F4. I was watching borrowed fansubs of the series at the time and was really getting into it. I think it was probably the second shojo series I was interested in, after Fushigi Yuugi. Most of my other custom wallpapers have been screenshots of video games, particularly some levels in Adventure of Lolo games that I was having trouble figuring out. I found it helpful to stare at them in class, and using them as wallpaper was a perfect alternative to running an NES emulator during class.
As for manga wallpaper, it would be difficult to scan a manga panel with good enough quality to be worth making a wallpaper at modern resolutions, so have the only userpic I've made from a manga panel scan. Does anyone recognize it?
