Today's Bridge: I couldn't find Sam, so I asked Raymond to join us, but then Sam showed up anyway and Ken drew out. We started with 3NT with four overtricks - I'm not sure whether the slam was there to bid, but Raymond had responded 1NT with an opening hand and it was only because I had 16 that I raised to 2NT. The grand, at least, depended on catching the king of clubs, and my hearts set up. Sam made a game in hearts next, and then Raymond opened 1D when I had S x-x H A-9-x-x D A-x-x-x C K-Q-x - good enough for game, but I bid 1H, planning to show my strength later. When he bid 1S, I jumped to 3NT. Sam started with a low spade into S K-Q-J-x H K-J-x D 9-x-x C A-x-x. It's not a bad notrump collection, but our diamonds are very vulnerable and a bad split really hurts us. The king of spades held the lead, so I crossed to the king of clubs and led my other spade. When Sam went up with the ace, the contract was mine - he led a diamond back, but too late, because I had three spades, three clubs, two hearts, and the ace of diamonds in total. I think holding up the ace for a second round is a good move - if I have a third spade, he can't stop me from taking three spade tricks, but if I only have two, the holdup keeps me to two spades. Then I have to fall back on the heart finesse, which fails. I think the suit split 3-3, but I can still only take advantage of that if the diamonds are also 3-3. In the second rubber, we started with a 3H - S K-x-x H K-J-x-x-x D K-Q-J-10-x facing S Q-x-x-x H A-10-x D x C 10-x-x-x-x. Dan C. had bid spades, so Sam led a low one to the ace, and I ruffed the club return low. I tried the heart finesse, but Dan took the queen and led another club, which I ruffed - I had no losers to throw away and he could just keep leading clubs at me. I led the king of hearts and both opponents followed, but I couldn't afford to pull the last trump and leave myself unable to defend the clubs. I made the mistake of cashing the king of spades before leading the king of diamonds - Sam took the ace and led another club. I ruffed with the jack and started to run diamonds, sluffing clubs. Dan ruffed in and led a spade - I was locked in dummy because I hadn't held the king, so I had to lose the final spade. Fortunately, that was only four losers and I made it out with nine tricks. I'd been trying to make game. Sam ended the day with a final game, and that was probably my last round of Bridge for the year.

Today's Work: I got in really late and had to leave early because they were waxing the floors, but I got the problem from yesterday completely worked out by the time I left. I just didn't have time to do anything with the solution, largely because this is a big one and I'll have to tell the entire team how to update it properly. Technology is complicated.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
