Today's Bridge: Dan H. and I got a lot of practice with passing, but the opponents didn't make most of their contracts. Our defense was spot on the whole way, and the opponents bid some games they had no business bidding. They picked up a 1NT along the way, but we finally got to declare when I opened 1S on S A-8-x-x-x H A D A-x-x C Q-x-x-x and was passed out. Dan's S Q-9 H K-Q-x-x D 9-x-x-x-x-x C x was just too light to bid. The opening lead was the queen of diamonds, covered by the king. I had to assume that one opponent or the other was singleton, so I took the ace - probably a mistake, since Ken was the most likely singleton and couldn't hurt me on lead, while holding up the ace would at least require him to ruff the next two diamond leads. Anyway, I cashed the ace of hearts and led a low club, which Dan won to lead the jack of diamonds. Ken apparently forgot that it was the top diamond and ruffed, leading a heart on which I pitched my last diamond. I then threw a club on the queen of hearts, all following, and led a diamond, on which Ken threw a heart while I ruffed low. I then ruffed a club, ruffed another diamond with the ace, and got a bit worried when Dan threw a club, but he followed when I ruffed my last club with the queen. Then it was a cavalcade of spades in which my eight ultimately came out on top for a second overtrick. I don't know how the hand plays if Ken throws two clubs or two hearts, whichever is the shorter suit, on Dan's top diamonds, but I think I'm off one. The next hand was 3NT - I had S Q-x H A-J-x D x-x-x C A-K-Q-9-x, and 1NT seemed like a more sensible opening than 1D, although on a recount, I think that's 16. I'm sure I only had 15, but I guess I miscounted. Twice. Anyway, we ended up in 3NT with Dan's S K-J-x-x H K-9-x-x D J-x-x C J-x. The opening heart lead gave me a trick, but even if the clubs behaved, I needed one more. So I led the queen of spades, and when it held, I was able to cash the clubs. Ken threw a second heart on the last club, and when I led the jack, he showed out. It was a simple matter to finesse against the ten for another overtrick, although that was marked on the opening lead, had I thought about it for a few seconds. I guess the auction should have gone 1C-1NT and then either 2NT (passed based on the partscore) or 2C-2H-3C-3NT. It probably plays about the same from his side of the table - the only thing that saves us is that Dan C. had both the ace of spades and the doubleton A-K of diamonds, so the suit was blocked.

Today's Work: Our usual biweekly meeting went well, but then I saw some weirdness when I started working on my assignments. I created a build image and installed it four different times, and got four different results. At least one of them was the desired result, so that's a plus. I guess I'll try making a fresh build tomorrow and working from there.

My chicken wasn't thawed enough to make fajitas tonight, so I just tossed some chicken tenders in a bag, dumped in some sauce, and shook vigorously. Hopefully, it's thawed by tomorrow, because I don't have many quick dinners ready.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
