Today's Bridge: It started with a 1NT: S J-x-x H A-x D A-K-J-9-x C Q-J-x facing S 10-9-8-x H J-x D 7-x-x-x C A-x-x. I won the heart lead and led the ace of diamonds, hoping for a 2-2 split. Dan H. (LHO) threw a club. The only option I saw was to cash the king as well, cross to the ace of clubs to unblock the suit, and lead a diamond back. Ken let me have the jack, so I pitched to his queen and prepared to weather a storm of hearts. I had to keep both clubs and my last diamond, so I threw most of my spades, keeping only the jack in the end and leaving dummy to take care of guarding the spades as best it could. Fortunately, as I'd hoped, the opponents' spade honors were split and neither was willing to open the suit. They took the king of clubs, then one top spade, and finally exited in clubs to give me the final two tricks I needed. We finished the game with a 4H when I was too strong to overcall in my five-card heart suit: S Q-x H A-K-Q-x-x D J-x C A-K-Q-x. I doubled Ken's 1D, Dan H. redoubled, and Dan C. responded 1H. Ken rebid his diamonds, but I figured Dan had to have an ace for his unforced bid, so I jumped straight to 4H. He made it with an over or two. But the opponents struck back with two games - I had a chance to cash the setting trick in a 3C and missed it. The next rubber started with a 5H when Dan C. opened 1NT, I used Stayman to get us to game in our trump fit, and he decided to look for slam even though I'd said we didn't have it. The opponents didn't cash their two top diamonds, so they never got a trick. It's a good thing I was, in fact, almost strong enough to consider slam. The opponents made a partscore, but Ken failed to make the followup 3H because he was playing for an overtrick.

Today's Work: We picked the work we'll be doing for the next two weeks, and then I gave everyone a quick tutorial in how to use git. I'm investigating a problem where a Windows service crashes. I don't even really know how to start debugging that. I've got a few ideas for how to proceed, at least.

I made fajitas tonight using two pounds of chicken instead of just one. Obviously, that leaves enough for tomorrow night, which is what I usually try to do, but this time, I have more chicken left than usual.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
