Today's Bridge: Dan C. and I took on Bruce and Ken, and the first hand was a bit of a disaster due to a miscommunication or a misunderstanding. I had S A-Q-10-8-6-5-x H x-x D x C A-Q-x, and I was second to bid, so I planned to pre-empt 4S over any opening bid. Ken passed, so I just opened 1S, and Dan jumped to 3NT. I knew he intended to close out, but because my hand was so distributional, I thought it would play much better in spades, so I corrected to 4S. He bid 4NT, which seemed like it might be natural, but I took it as Blackwood and bid 5H. 5NT, 6C, 6NT later, I figured he really wanted notrump, but trump would be spades and I bid 7S. Ken doubled, and Bruce led the ace of diamonds. With Dan's S J-x H A-Q-x-x D K-J-x C K-x-x-x, that was that, although both the spade and heart finesses won, so the slam would have made. I don't see why he tried to correct out of spades so many times with two of them, and it couldn't have been Blackwood because he wouldn't have bid 5NT with a missing ace. I feel justified, though, because in notrump, the opponents can potentially attack our diamonds early, and if any finesse fails, we're set even in 3NT. 4S is unbeatable - even if every finesse loses, we've got six spades, three clubs, and the ace of hearts. We couldn't really recover from that, especially when Ken insisted his way up to an unbeatable 4H even though Bruce failed to support him. We came back with a 4C that I expected to be a sacrifice, but it made, and then a simple 3NT, but I think the opponents were too far ahead for us to catch up.

Today's Work: I finally managed to solve that problem I've been wrestling with for the past week, so we're moving ahead. I expect to be pretty busy with that for the next while, getting people set up with what I've found. There's one more thing I need to wait for before we can really get started, but at least it's less of an obstacle and more just something I need to wait for.

If you haven't checked tedcruz.com, it's worth taking a look. I don't know whether that was his actual page or not, but it might as well be.

Yes, I'm THAT Nidoking. Sometimes I write fanfiction... often I waste all my time playing video games and watching anime. But it's not a waste if I enjoy it, right? I can quote from a movie, video game, anime series, or British comedy apropos of just about any situation, and one of my main goals in life is to entertain people. (The other big one is amassing as much anime and manga as I can... see below for a progress report.) That's me in a nutshell. ("Help! I'm trapped in a nutshell! What a bloody great nutshell this is!")
